Sustainable Timber Milling

Responsible harvesting, renewable energy and a 100% closed-loop waste system.

Our Practises

Low-Impact, Responsibly Harvested Hardwood

Our canopy-guided selective harvesting method works with the natural structure of the forest – not against it. Trees are chosen based on health, spacing and regeneration patterns, ensuring minimal disturbance and strong long-term forest health.

  • Supports higher natural regeneration rates than conventional harvesting

  • Maintains balanced canopy and understory ecosystems

  • Reduces fuel loads and contributes to lower bushfire risk

  • 60% of our logs are sourced from sustainably managed Private Native Forests

This method ensures a continuous, healthy supply of Australian hardwood while protecting biodiversity and future forest productivity.

Our Process

Renewable Energy & Zero Fossil Fuels

Renewable Energy & Zero Fossil Fuels

Our kilns run 100% on sawdust and dry mill shavings - eliminating the need for gas or coal. Each year this system avoids 200+ tonnes of fossil fuels, prevents 600+ tonnes of CO₂ emissions and delivers consistent, efficient kiln drying.

Closed-Loop Timber Waste Recycling

We operate a true zero-waste mill. Every by-product is repurposed. Sawdust & shavings become renewable kiln fuel. Chips become local biofuel. Offcuts become wood pellets. Over 3,000 m³ of material is recycled annually - meaning 100% of our waste stays out of landfill.

Supporting Forest Regeneration

By maintaining canopy structure and preserving seed sources, our selective harvesting encourages strong natural regrowth and supports long-term forest resilience. This strengthens both native ecosystems and the broader hardwood supply chain.

The Goal

Why Sustainable Timber Matters

Choosing responsibly milled Australian hardwood helps:

  • Reduce embodied carbon

  • Support low-impact forestry

  • Strengthen circular, bio-based manufacturing

  • Protect long-term native forest health

South Coast Timber is committed to delivering quality hardwood with minimal environmental impact – powered by renewable energy, responsible sourcing and a circular production model.
